The Armoire - When a young boy goes missing, his best friend is tormented by the mystery surrounding the disappearance and begins sleeping in his armoire. Through magnificent art direction, Jamie Travis brings us another poignant children’s tale, eerily capturing a young boy’s struggle to hide his secrets.

The Cave - Set in 1961 in the Chilcotin Territory of Western Canada, The Cave recounts the story of a bear hunter who discovers a secret portal to the spirit world. This beautifully crafted film provides a powerful cinematic rendering of an authentic Tsilhqot’in oral story.

Danse Macabre - In haunting deserted spaces, the choreographed erratic motions of a corpse evoke the final spasms of life. Based on a concept by Robert Lepage, Pedro Pires’s exquisitely photographed morbid ballet pushes the traditional dance film to new cinematic heights.

But when the driver disappears and a madcap scramble for fuel ensues, this careless ride turns darkly funny.

The Spine - Academy Award-winner Chris Landreth employs his signature style to tell the story of Dan and Mary and their broken marriage. Through a co-dependent couples’ support group, they dig deep to rediscover their history and the ties that brought them together in the first place.

Quantitative Questionnaire

Qualitative Questionnaire

Audience Research

When carrying out my research I will be required to use both quantitative and qualitative research in order to get vast amounts of information from my target audience.

Quantitative Research
This type of research aims to measure the activity of my entire target audience by measuring a sample. The use of a sample involves conducting research with groups of people who make a population which, although small, is representative of the entire audience. This type of research is mostly made up of yes or no answers. This is good because it means the questions are relatively easy to answer but it does not gather vast amount of information.

Qualitative Research
This type of research is commonly carried out by journalist because they want to investigate the top in depth. Qualitative research into audience attempts to develop an in-depth understanding of who is consuming media products and their responses. This type of research has a lot of open questions which means that a large amount of information can be gained from this.

Journey of Discovery Idea

This is another one of my ideas where the camera follows a character throughout their whole day. This would consist of a variety of different activities which are completed on a day to day basis such as getting up, going out, meeting people. All of these activities will develop the character, change them and turn them into who they really are, not just a person keeping himself to himself and hiding from the world. The short film will start off quite dark and dull and will gradually get brighter symobising the change in the characters feeling and happiness. I will also show this by using fades at the beginning of the short film then ending with using cut shots. I will do this in order to show how much the character changes over the day.

The aim of this short film is to send a message to people that they shouldn't hide themselves from the world and just be themselves in order to find happiness.

Life of a Dog Idea

I thought this idea was very good because it is very unique and if I did this the right way I would be able to draw the reader in. This short film would follow the day of a dog which would consist of the dogs general day of walking, sleeping and eating. This film would be made of mostly P.O.V. shots in order to put the audience in the dogs shoes and to make the audience feel connected to the dog. Low angle shots would also be used in order to highlight the high difference between people and the dog. This would also make the audience wonder what it is like to actually be a dog.

This idea originated from a variety of different short films and clips which focused on different animals which encourages the audience to keep watching because of the focus on one character/object.

The movie 'Jaws' (1975) also inspired me because Spielberg used vast amounts of P.O.V. shots of the shark in order to make the audience feel connected with the shark and to build tension.

Conventions of a Short Film

From my research on short films so far I have found that short films have a good plot and sometimes had a hidden meaning. I have also found out that the short films mostly focus on one or a few main characters instead of having vast amounts of characters which is seen in full length movies. An example of this is the short film 'Geri's Game'which only has one character. Short films also engage the audience right from the beginning in order to encourage the reader to keep watching and to draw them in. This is achieved by the use of a number of different factors. These factors include vast amounts of cut shots used which is done to add pace which keeps the audience interested. Vast amounts of diegetic sound is also used in order to make the audience feel connected with the characters in the film which therefore encourages them to keep watching. The titles used also draws the reader in because a majority of short films, which I analysised, have white titles over a black background. This is done in order to highlight the titles and to make them stand out.

Black Button Analysis (First Five Minutes)

Black Button is about a man who finds himself with the option to press a button which kills someone but gives his 10 million dollars or to walk away.

Camera
Mid shots have been used throughout this short film which shows the character facial expressions in the scene which also helps to build tension throughout the short film. A long shot is uses to show the location in which the film is set in order to keep the audience interested in the film. A close up of the man behind the desk is used in order to show his importance in the scene. This is enforced by a ped up of him which also shows he is a important, powerful man. A zoom is used of the button in order to show that it is relevant to the story and is key to the ending of the short film. More close ups of the door handle and the key are used in order to show that they are very important in the short film.

M.E.S.
The location is a white room. It is very simple and basic and gives off a sort of supernatural, unreal feeling. The room does not contain much with only a few chairs, a desk and a lamp. This makes the audience curious about the rooms purpose and what is going to happen next which encourages them to keep watching. The man behind the desk is wearing a suit which tells the audience that he is important and that he may be quite rich. The other man is not very important because his hair is in a mess and he is wearing basic office uniform which is made up of a shirt and tie. He also tries to leave the room but cannot because the man behind the desk has locked the door. This shows that the office worker is not very powerful. The office works also does not know what is happening which shows that he needs the man behind the desk to tell him.

Editing
At the beginning of the short story there are black titles on a white background. This is good because it highlights the text therefore interesting the audience. The short film has vast amounts of cut shots in order to add a fast pace and to build tension to make the audience wonder what is going to happen later in the scene. A shot reverse shot is used in order to add pace and to highlight the two characters difference in emotion. A motivated cut is used in order to make the audience wonder want to see what is in the case and to build tension.

Sound
The office works tone shows that he is confused and worried about the situation in which he is in. Another tension building technique is used by the man behind the desk shouting which encourages the audience to watch on. There is also tension building music used throughout in order to draw the audience in.

Geri's Game (1997)

Geri's Game is about an old man who sets up a chess game to play his greatest opponent - himself. This short film was written and directed by Jan Pinkava.

I thought this short film was very well made because it had a very good plot which draws the reader in and encourages them to keep watching. It was also is quite funny and kept the audience entertained. I would like my short film to keep the audience entertained and to have a ggod plot like this short.

Ratrix Hero Analysis

'Ratrix Hero' is a short animated film which take its inspiration from the film Matrix. The hero is a rat and is chased by agents with cats' heads.

Camera
There is a worms eye view of the location in which the short film is set. This is done to show the bad weather which symbolises that something bad is going to happen which builds tension. This is also done to set the location of a city and to show how big it is. There is panning of the city in order to build tension and to highlight the shadows which makes the audience wonder what may lurk in them. There is a very fast zoom of the mouse, which is the man character. This is done in order to show his importance in the scene and to add a fast pace to it. Close ups of the mouse are also used in order to build on his importance in the short film. There is also a birds eye view shot of the city in order to show the surroundings and to set the scene. There are a vast high amount of POV shots used in order to build tension and to put the audience in the characters shoes. Mid shots are used to show the surroundings and makes the auidience what has happened in the past. Depth of field is also used to highlight the chicken which shows he is key to the plot of the short story. A long shot is also used in order to show the chickens location and a low angle shot is used to show the mouse falling.

M.E.S.
The short film is set in a city atmosphere which is quite dark and dingy. This portrays the setting as quite dangerous and not a very nice place to be. There are bins and graffiti which adds to the fact that it is quite a dingy area. There are very bright colours used in order to show the aspect of the explosion in the scene which contrasts again the dark background. The buildings in the scene are damaged which shows that the setting is dangerous. The main character in the short film is wearing a black robe and sunglasses which shows that he is quite mysterious which adds to the tension in the scene.

Sound
Diegetic sound is used throughtout the scene in order to build tension. The chicken and the cat in the film makes a high pitched noise which makes the audience wonder what is going to happen to them. Music is also used in order to build tension throughout and to establish an ending to the short film.

Editing
Fast cut shots and fast fades are used in this short film to build tension which therefore keeps the auidnece interested and draws them in. Vast amounts of slow motion effects are used to draw the reader in and to add a more dramatic effect therefore building tension.

10 Minutes Analysis (First Five Minutes)

10 minutes is a short film by Ahmed Imamovic. It takes place in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Rome, Italy. The film begins with an Asian tourist in Rome to whom 10 minutes was a short amount of time. Simultaneously, in Sarajevo, a mother tells her son to get some water and bread. This is in 1994, when the wars in Sarajevo are at its full peak. The poor boy comes back to see a horrid sight. In ten “short” minutes, the tourist gets his photos washed, while the boy loses everything he had.

Camera
The short film opening with an establishing long shot of a city. This has been done in order to set the scene to make the audience aware of where the short film is being set. This is followed by a pan of the city to show its size and to show its beauty. A low angle shot is used to show the Asian tourist. This has been done in order to highlight the building size with stands above him therefore making him look small and weak. There is a point of view shot of the Asian man looking up at the city this also means that it is a low angle shot which therefore makes the man look small and lost because he is looking round the city aimlessly. There is a mid shot of a man asking directions which is intended to show the size of the city and to in some ways limit the mans importance in the short film. Vast amounts of mid shorts are used in order to show the location difference between the two settings in the short scene. There is tracking of the boy in order to show his importance in the scene. There is also a low angle shot of the boy coming down the stairs which builds on the boys importance. When the boy goes outside vast amounts of mid shots and long shots are used in order to set the scene and to show the contrast between the two cities. A zoom is used to highlight the boy and to show his importance in the short film.

Editing
The short film has white titles on a black background. This is good because it highlights the titles and draws them in. A vast amount of cut shots are used throughout the short film in order to build pace and in order to build tension therefore making the audience wonder what is going to happen.

M.E.S.
The short film is set in two locations - Italy, Rome and Sarajevo, Bosnia (war zone). Italy, Rome is a massive city with lots of cars, bikes and people. This is a very busy area but is quite a nice place to live in contrast to the war zone. It is very bright setting which makes the audience believe that this is a nice place to live. The war zone on the other hand is dark, dull and dingy which shows that this is not a very nice place to live. The room in which the boy lives is very cramped which shows his family is quite poor. This is build on by the peoples dark clothes and little belongings. The woman asks a boy to get water and bread this reforces the fact they are poor because the boy has to travel in order to get basic foods. When the father comes home the boy tries to grab the gun which shows a gun is a common object in the household. This highlights the fact that they are living in a war zone and are used to violence.

Sound
There is a key change between the language which shows the change in location. There is also a baby crying which makes the audience feel uneasy and to build tension. The mother makes noises to calm the baby down which also builds tension and makes the audience more interested in the short film and encourages them to watch on.
